new species

About 70% of the Earth's surface is water-covered, nearly all of which is contained in our oceans and seas. Understandably, these systems are some of the least explored, particularly in the context of coral reefs. Hundreds of new species are continuously being discovered, even til' today. As a taxonomist who regularly describes and name new creatures, I realize I am in a position of great fortune. Yet this is also a humbling reminder that in today's climate of ecosystem turmoil, new species are being lost faster than they are discovered. Every new discovery is an opportunity for us to better characterize the wonderful biodiversity we are so privileged to have. More importantly, it allows us to learn what we didn't know, protect what we now have, and cherish what we have left.
